This whole song was actually written, recorded, and mixed all in one chaotic night of "Getting stuff done" XD All in all though, I think it came out really good, and I am quite proud of the lyrics and meaning behind this song especially. Exiark also did an AMAZING job on the track, so massive brohoofs to him X3
The theme revolves around a dialog between Sunset Shimmer and her ex mentor, Princess Celestia. Sunset Shimmer was her trusted student, much like Twilight, but abandoned and betrayed her friends when she tried to take power for herself by force.
After she was defeated, instead of facing up to her mistakes, she ran away through the mirror into the EQG world. It was there in her self inflicted banishment that she realizes exactly what she had done, and feels that with so many things she has done wrong, there is no possible way to be forgiven, or turn back to the way she was before
This song is for everyone, including me, who at some point or another felt like they were alone in this world, like no one cared for them, or like you could never face up to or be forgiven for past mistakes...
This song was written to draw a parallel very close to my heart between Celestia and Sunset Shimmer's relationship, and the relationship we experience with God. We as humans have to recognize our own sinfulness, that is the first step in asking for forgiveness, as we need to recognize we did wrong in order to ask to be forgiven for that wrong. But sometimes it can be hard to look past that sin, and we can often let it drag us down, letting it make us feel like because we do so many bad things God could never forgive us.
What sometimes we need to be reminded of, is how from the moment Jesus died on the cross, an offer was made to take that sin away, and that offer still stands to this day. We can often go through our whole lives looking for forgiveness, or running from it because we feel we can't be forgiven, when all along, God was right there for us, with one hand outstretched.
And how comforting it is, how amazing it is to know that someone has always been there for you from the very start, even when you didn't know it, and is always willing to welcome you back with open arms.
